Men Gathering Update
We sharpen each other This Thursday, Men's Brotherhood meets for the second session of our spring series, "Present" – Being the Man You're Actually Called to Be. Last week's conversation about emotional availability in friendships and marriage hit harder than most of us expected. Several guys stayed an extra hour just to keep talking, and the conversation has continued throughout the week. That's what belonging to this group is all about. This week we're opening up Proverbs 27:17, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." We'll be asking honestly: who is sharpening you right now? And who are you sharpening? These aren't easy questions for men who've been taught to go it alone, but they're the right ones. We want to spotlight Tony Guerrero, who quietly organized a work crew of eight men last Saturday to help a widowed church member repair her fence and repaint her front door. No announcement, no social media post — just men showing up. Tony, that's the kind of leadership that changes a neighborhood. Self-Righteousness
Child of God, the greatest hindrance to the flow of grace in a man’s life is not always sin in its obvious form, but the subtle pride of self-righteousness. It hides in plain sight. It sits in the thoughts of those who compare themselves with others and conclude that they are better. The Scriptures tell us plainly, “They, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise” (2 Corinthians 10:12). Self-righteousness is the root of offense because, once a man begins to think he is superior, he becomes critical, judgmental, and bitter when others do not measure up to his standard. Even for those enlightened by the Gospel, this remains a danger. To think of yourself more highly than you ought is to frustrate the grace and power at work within you. The standard for your life is not another man’s weakness or strength; the standard must always be Christ Himself and Him revealed in us. Beloved, your joy is robbed the moment you measure yourself against another man. True joy flows when Christ is your focus, righteousness is your boast, and He is your sufficiency. You cannot live the God-life by comparing yourself with others; you live it by beholding Him.
